Hotel Santa Caterina, Siena
Via E.S. Piccolomini, 7, SienaHotel Santa Caterina, Siena - named in honour of the city's patron saint, this Siena hotel is a real delight. A beautifully renovated and refurbished eighteenth century villa, the building lies just a few metres from the Porta Romana, one of the medieval gates into the city. Pass through, and you are in one of Europe's unquestioned medieval masterpieces. Siena reached its peak during the early Middle Ages, before its population and trade were brutally diminished by the Black Death. The fact that the city and population took centuries to recover lends it an unchanged medieval ambience to this day - parts of Siena around the cathedral (il duomo) almost feel semi rural, and you can see the rolling hills of the Sienese countryside from the town.
This Siena hotel has spacious bedrooms, all decorated in charming antique Tuscan style, and giving a refined yet homely atmosphere. You'll start each day with a delicious breakfast on the veranda - gazing onto the large and luxuriant garden with the magnificent Sienese landscape unfolding beyond. All bedrooms have a private bathroom. All have minibar, air conditioning, shower and TV, and you have a choice of single, double, triple or quadruple rooms. The hotel has an internet connection, currency exchange and can organise massages. There is no hotel restaurant, but with so many fantastic places to eat in downtown Siena itself, there's really no need.
