Hotel Scudo di Francia, Reggio Emilia
Dating from 1857, the Hotel and Restaurant Scudo di Francia is in the historic centre of Reggio Emilia. This lovely four-star hotel could hardly be more central, lying on the Stradone del Vescovado. This is close by the ancient Via Emilia, the original Roman road which bisects the town and is the reason the town is here: Reggio Emilia started life 2000 years ago as Regium Lepidi, a staging post on the Roman highway.
And there is much history to enjoy in the town itself, a very manageable little Emilia-Romagna city, with superb restaurants and a wealth of cultural sights. Check out the twin central squares of Piazza Prampolini and Piazza San Prospero, to start your explorations of the city. This 'centro storico' is very attractive, with the cobbled streets shut to traffic. There are no intimidating hills here, and cycling is the popular way for getting about and discovering the sights. See the Museo Civici - an 18th century private collection of fossils, painting and archaeology; and the Galleria Parmeggiani has a fine collection of Italian, Flemish and Spanish painting, textiles, costumery, sculpture and bronzes. There are also a number of important medieval and baroque churches in the town.
Back at your comfortable city centre base, and you have air conditioned accommodation, with bathroom, minibar, TV and phone. There is a buffet breakfast each morning, safe storage for your valuables, room service and laundry. The front desk will be happy to advise on the best sights to see and on how to get around the city.
