Hotel Seggio, Vieste
Set in the historic centre of Vieste, on Puglia's Gargano Promontory, the Hotel Seggio has a marvellously tranquil clifftop location. Gazing down onto the waters, this lovely three-star hotel has its own lift/elevator leading down to the swimming pool and a private beach. Luxury indeed, and each morning you can savour superb views of the Adriatic from the raised breakfast room - before heading down to the beach, or into Vieste to discover its marvellous medieval centre.
Rooms here are double, triple or family size. There is a good restaurant (serving both local Pugliese and national Italian cuisine) and bar, and the entire hotel is non smoking. There is a lift-elevator to all floors, the front desk is open 24 hours for travel advice and safety deposit facilities. The hotel has a sauna, internet connections, and you can take breakfast in your room should you wish.
Sights in Vieste include the Cattedrale (a fine example of 11th century Apulian architecture), the Castle and the Church of St Francesco. One baleful memorial is the Chianca Amara or 'bitter stone', where as many as 5000 local people were beheaded when the Turks raided the city in 1554. There are the Caves of Gargano, and trips out to the lovely Tremiti Islands; there is San Giovanni Rotondo, the city of Padre Pio; and Monte Sant'Angelo, the hilltop sanctuary dedicated to St Michael.
