Hotel Selene, near Enna

Furnished in classical and elegant style, the Hotel Selene in Piazza Armerina provides a comfortable and welcoming way to enjoy this most historic of central Sicilian towns. Rooms here are single, double or triple. Each has minibar, telephone, air conditioning, TV and bathroom with shower. The hotel has an excellent restaurant and comfortable meeting areas; there are rooms for guests with limited mobility, free parking, newspapers are available, pets allowed, and the front desk staff are on hand around the clock for anything else you need.

Piazza Armerina, in the geographical centre of Sicily, is mainly famous for the Villa Romana del Casale of course. This is a remarkable set of Roman mosaics, the largest still in existence. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is much else to see in the town, including the huge Cathedral with its museum of relics (good for an hour or so of your time). Other notable buildings include the Palazzo Trigona and a clutch of fine early medieval churches. Other must-sees include the Aragonese Castle (1392-96) and the Priory Church of Sant'Andrea (11th century).

Then head out of town and explore some of the island's most beautiful countryside. There are Lakes Pergusa and Torrente Olivo, beautiful wooded areas and soaring hills. This central band of Sicily is particularly good for walking and cycling - the desk staff will be happy to advise on where you should go and what you should see. Journeys further afield to see the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento and the Baroque city of Noto are also highly recommended.
