Hotel Shelley e delle Palme, Lerici
Centrally located in Lerici, close to the sea, the Hotel Shelley e delle Palme offers a delightful base in this Ligurian coast town. It's a lovely spot - overlooking the beautiful and sheltered bay of Lerici, the hotel is named after the romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who loved and wrote about this part of Italy. The town is a popular jumping off point for ferries to Portofino, Portovenere and the villages of the Cinque Terre.
The double rooms here have bathrooms with tub and shower, air conditioning, telephone and TV. The hotel meanwhile has rooms and facilities for guests with disabilities, a very nice bar and an air conditioned restaurant with a superb view of the bay. Enjoy international, Italian and local Ligurian dishes, with seafood a particular speciality. The hotel is no smoking, there is a terrace, and the desk is open 24 hours a day.
There is much to see and explore. Lerici has its own castle, which for centuries controlled and protected the approaches to strategically important La Spezia. Today it houses a museum of palaeontology. Lerici dates back to Etruscan times (the ancient civilisation of northern Italy), and during the Middle Ages passed from Genoa to Lucca. Percy and Mary Shelley lived here and were visited by Lord Byron, giving the Golfo di Lerici its nickname of the Golfo dei Poeti. Essential trips include the Cinque Terre, Portovenere and the Amedeo Lia museum in La Spezia, home to 2000 works by famous artists including Tintoretto, Titian and Raphael.
