Genoa itself has a huge amount to see and do. This ancient city, spreading for miles along the Ligurian coastline, was once a major maritime republic (along with Venice, Pisa and Amalfi), colonising large swathes of the Mediterranean: navigators and explorers Christopher Columbus and Andrea Doria were famously sons of the city. And although Genoa endured a decline of three or more centuries from these heady days (arrested by a very successful regeneration in the last few years) it has remained a buzzing and cosmopolitan port, with a host of historic sights. You'll find great restaurants and bars, and landmarks include the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, some terrific museums, and of course the Old Port (Porto Antico) transformed by architect Renzo Piano.
