Hotel Sorriso, Lucera
This Lucera hotel lies close to the centre of the ancient Puglia town, on Viale Raffaello Sanzio. A charming modern building (constructed in the year 2000 by the local Capobianco family) it's very close by the Piazza di Vagno, one of the main entrances to the 'centro storico'. Personal service is all here, with the family directly managing the hotel. Set over five floors, with lift/elevator to every level, the hotel is furnished and finished in impeccable Italian style - 'boiserie' wooden walls, marble floors and plush sofas in the lobby, in which to sink and watch television, or enjoy a coffee or aperitif.
Rooms are single, double or twin, triple, suite or quadruple size - so this is perfect accommodation for everyone from solo business visitors to family groups. All rooms have a minibar, air conditioning (essential in the sunshine of Puglia), bathroom with shower and WC, television and telephone. This Puglia hotel has WiFi internet access is free for guests; there are meeting rooms, a garden, bar, and all public and private spaces are non smoking.
Lucera itself has a fascinating history. An ancient town, it was to here that Emperor Frederick II exiled 20,000 Arabs from Sicily in 1224. The town thus became the main Saracen town on the Italian mainland, and was known as Lucaera Saracenorum. In 1300, Charles II of Anjou sacked the town and banished the people or sold them into slavery, and the mosques were transformed into churches. Important historic sights include the Hohenstaufen Castle, the Church of San Francesco and the Cathedral, which was erected in 1300 on the last standing medieval mosque in Italy.
