Hotel Sovestro, San Gimignano

Set in beautiful, peaceful countryside on the outskirts of the unique medieval citadel of San Gimignano and within easy reach of the beautiful renaissance cities of Siena and Florence, the charming family-run Hotel Sovestro is a great choice for a relaxing holiday in this fascinating region. San Gimignano is a bustling tourist town whose main attraction is its curious and distinctive architecture, which bears witness to a vibrant, prosperous past. Between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, rival families built increasingly tall towers - 72 in all - to outdo one another and the result is an extraordinary skyline, sometimes referred to as a "medieval Manhattan".

There is a wide choice of rooms - 40 in all - including twin rooms, doubles, triples, connecting suites and family rooms where cots and high-chairs are available if required. All have en-suite bathroom, minibar, direct-dial telephone, satellite/cable TV and hairdryer and guests can choose between continental or full English breakfast in the morning. The hotel has its own inviting swimming pool where guests can cool off after a busy day's sightseeing.

Also owned and run by the Failli family is the excellent Da Pode outdoor restaurant next door, where guests can enjoy traditional Italian hospitality and sample typical Tuscan cuisine "al fresco" on the beautiful terrace.

The front desk has 24-hour reception and porter service as well as left-luggage storage and a safety-deposit box where guests can leave their valuables. There is ample free car-parking and all credit cards are accepted.
