Hotel Stella d' Italia, Marsala
Mario Rapisardi 7, MarsalaThis atmospheric four-star hotel in the historic centre of Marsala has been converted from a 19th-century building which is typical of the vernacular style of the city, and has preserved all its charm. Fully renovated in 2006, it is set amongst a group of impressive ancient aristocratic houses, located in a quiet side street off the main square, La Loggia. From the top of its four storeys, you'll enjoy a great view of the Chiesa Madre, and in fact this is a good base for exploring all the churches in this appealing Baroque city. The old centre has been made into a pedestrian-only area, making for far more relaxed tourism. Churches apart, Marsala (on the western coast of Sicily, in the province of Trapani) is of course the home of the famous wine industry, so you shouldn't leave without sampling at least a glass of this delicious strong, sweet drink.
The Hotel Stella d'Italia has a welcoming entrance with an impressive wrought-iron gate, lit up at night, and its interiors feature a valuable collection of contemporary sculptures and paintings, including work by the Scicli Group. Despite the age of the building, the air-conditioned rooms are fully up to date and feature cable and satellite television, refrigerated minibars, direct-dial telephones, desks with lamps, and bath robes. Breakfast is included, and drinks, snacks and small meals can be enjoyed in the bar/restaurant. For the full Sicilian dining experience, the hotel is happy to recommend local restaurants. Transport to and from the airport can be arranged, and there is a free car park and valet parking. Meeting facilities and internet access are also available.
