Set in the peaceful Italian Riviera town of Chiavari, the Hotel Stella Del Mare is family run accommodation, in a quiet part of town, and had been very nicely renovated, with spacious rooms (single, double, triple or family size. Accommodation is on a B&B, half or full board basis. All rooms have phone, bathroom with shower and WC, air conditioning and TV. The hotel has a bar and restaurant, newspapers and 24-hour front desk.

Chiavari is in the Genoa province of Liguria region and lies midway between Genoa and La Spezia. This is a great spot from which to explore the coast and the mountainous terrain of Liguria. Towns nearby include Rapallo, Lavagno, Sestri Levante and Recco. There is a pretty 'centro storico' and a castle, a remnant of the town's more colourful past. During the First French Empire in Italy, this area became the French 'departement' of Apennins with Chiavari its capital. The fame was shortlived, from 1805 to 1814, at which point Napoleon fell from grace.

While you're staying at this Chiavari hotel, make time to take a trip a few kilometres west along the coast to the Portofino promontory, which is protected as the Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino. The highest point (Monte di Portofino) has stunning views. There are well marked paths through the forests of holm oak, pine and wild thyme. You simply have to explore this delightful area with stupendous sea views.
