The little Chianti town of Castellina in Chianti lies around 15km north west of Siena and 35km south of Florence. In the Siena province of Tuscany, it lies in the Chianti hills, between the the Elsa, Pesa and Arbia rivers. This ancient Etruscan town has archaeological evidence of its prehistoric days, in the Poggino necropolis and the Montecalvario Mound, with its four sixth century BC tombs. Castellina in Chianti's great days came in the Middle Ages, when it was fortified against attack, with the massive Rocca (or castle) with its fourteenth century tower. The Rocca has a small museum dedicated to Etruscan finds. Other sights in the town include the Palazzo Ugolini-Squarcialupi and the Palazzo Bianciardi, and the Via delle Volte underground tunnel.
