Hotel Torre Santa Flora, near Arezzo
A quite lovely hotel in a superb setting just ten minutes out of Arezzo - the Hotel Torre Santa Flora is in Subbiano, north of the medieval Tuscan city. This is a perfect spot from which to explore the art cities of Perugia, Florence, Cortona and Siena - each of them less than an hour away. Nestling deep in beautiful Tuscan countryside, you can experience the best wine, art and natural beauty that Tuscany and Umbria have to offer.
After a long day's explorations, simply unwind in this lovely bucolic setting, feet up by the traditional fireplace in the cosy lounge area. The tower on which the hotel is based lies on the banks of the River Arno (from which the valley of the Valdarno gets its name). Originally a Lombard fortification, the tower then became a mill belonging to Benedictine monks of the order of St Flora and Lucilla. Today, this magnificent building is home to four loft suites overlooking the Casentino valley, its hills and waters.
This was formerly a place of rest and refreshment for travellers and errant knights. The tradition of hospitality continues to these (rather more peaceful) days. The rooms are dressed in sumptuous Tuscan furnishings, and are complemented by a winery, bar, restaurant and family sitting room. Rooms have bathroom, TV, air conditioning, minibar and phone. Nearby, you'll find historic Arezzo of course, with its medieval architecture, numerous sights and good shopping. The main highway and railway station are just 15 minutes from here.
