And there's plenty to see in the regional capital Naples, including the royal palace, the Galleria di Capodimente, where fine art is on show, and the Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino). You can also enjoyably spend a day exploring the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum and visiting the volcano that lay behind their destruction, Mount Vesuvius.
