Created from the careful restoration of an old country house, the Hotel Venice Resort is in Tessara - a kilometre from Venice's Marco Polo airport, five minutes from the Venice Casino and (remarkably) just a quarter hour from downtown Venice.

A traditional rural retreat near the city? A difficult combination but this Venetian hotel artfully pulls it off. This was an old farm estate, made up of three lovely houses, and surrounded by 12 hectares of gardens and park. The hotel has 32 rooms and junior suites, very nicely finished with an eye for detail. Rooms have bathroom with shower, safe, air conditioning and heating, hairdryer, direct phone and modem, desk and lamp, TV with cable and satellite, and breakfast is provided. The hotel has a lounge bar, there is free parking for guests, and babysitting is available. The hotel has a 24-hour front desk, and there is a spa with beauty treatments.

A delightful rural escape then, yet conveniently close to Venice itself. Unmissable sights in the city include the Basilica di San Marco - St Mark's Cathedral a confection of gilded Baroque decoration, set upon St Mark's Square (memorably described by the invading Napoleon Bonaparte as 'the drawing room of Europe'). There is the Palazzo Ducale, or Doge's Palace, for hundreds of years the seat of power and governance of the mighty sea power that was Venice. There is the Accademia, a treasure house of art (and Venetian artists produced some of the most important work of the Renaissance of course). Most of all there is Venice itself, an extraordinary collection of islands, linked by bridges and narrow 'calle', afloat in the Lagoon - perhaps the world's most romantic and most remarkable city.
