Hotel Villa Flori, Como

This four-star Lake Como hotel enjoys a superb position on the western banks of the lake near Cernobbio. Check the map and you'll see that this is the bottom corner of the westerly of the two branches of Lago di Como.

Hotel Villa Fiori was once a private home, fought over by Lombard aristocrats, but now all is peace. It was converted into a hotel in 1958, and was then entirely renovated in 1992. The house sits amidst a glorious, and mature park, where the original owner of the villa, the Marquis Flori, grew his oranges and lemons - the mild lakeside climate is ideal for this, northerly as we are here in Italy. The 1992 remodelling of the hotel created a lovely place to stay - where old sits seamlessly alongside new. Venetian stucco work and carefully restored frescoes are twinned with 'cutting edge technical efficiency'.

The 45 elegantly decorated guest rooms of the hotel have, for the most part, terraces overlooking Lago di Como. Soft carpets, silken fabrics and precious hangings create a gorgeous and welcoming ambience. All rooms have air conditioning, colour satellite TV, pay TV, minibar, direct telephone line, hairdryer and safe deposit box. The Raimondi Ristorante offers the opportunity of spending a pleasant evening in a romantic 19th Century setting. There is an enchanting view of the garden and the lake from its large windows. The classic Italian cuisine offers a selection of Lombard specialities.

Golf lovers should note that there are numerous good courses in the immediate area - ask at reception and they will help you book your round. The hotel has four meeting rooms with microphones, flip charts, overhead projector, slide projector, VHS screens, fax and photocopier. Telephone lines, secretarial and reception services and simultaneous translation can be organised. There is a car park and indoor garage, and a private dock for motorboats. The hotel even has its own private chapel.
