Hotel Villa Giulia, Noto
Set in the expansive grounds of a former vineyard, this hotel near Noto, Sicily is a serene hideaway where guests can unwind in quiet surroundings. It's housed in an elegant villa dating back to 1874 and hotel residents sleep in converted peasant houses. Though the hotel ensures a stay steeped in rustic traditions, the designers haven't forgotten the demands of the modern traveller - each room features all modern conveniences including air conditioning and satellite television.
Just a short distance from the hotel is the UNESCO heritage city of Noto, considered one of the jewels of the region. Razed to the ground by an earthquake in the 17th century, the town was redesigned and built by the architect Giovanni Battista Landolina in a high baroque style. The many churches and palaces set out in an orderly design are testament to Landolina's enduring legacy, and wonderful scenery for a day's sightseeing. After the sun sets you can enjoy an evening drink or meal on one of the tables that cover the tree-lined Piazza Municipio.
There's plenty to keep you at this Noto hotel if you've had enough of sightseeing; a large swimming pool with deckchairs and sun-loungers is a perfect place to put your feet up and bask in the sun of Sicily, or you can wander through the glades of pine trees and masses of azaleas that populate the large garden. The hotel restaurant is located in an elegant flag-stoned barn and guests eat a variety of local dishes sitting next to ancient wine casks - now empty alas!
