Hotel Villa Liberty, Pontecurone near Alessandria
The Hotel Villa Liberty has its provenance in the home of the Agerli family, a beautiful 19th century estate now artfully converted into luxurious hotel accommodation. The country house is on four floors with a panoramic terrace and a second building next door. This latter contains the terrific La Canonica restaurant and a meeting room. This Pontecurone hotel sits within its own private walled garden (some 8000 square metres).
Rooms at the hotel are doubles, all with minibar, bathroom, air conditioning, telephone and TV. The hotel, in Piedmont's Alessandria province, has a good restaurant, WiFi internet access, rooms and facilities for guests with limited mobility, a 24-hour front desk, bicycle rental and meeting rooms. The hotel, lying a few kilometres east of Alessandria and to the south of Pavia, is handily close to the town centre, railway station and highway exit.
The little town of Pontecurone (which translates as 'bridge on the Curone') lies on the west bank of that river, 100km east of Turin (Torino) and around 25km east of Alessandria. Pontecurone is remembered as the site of the 1635 battle in which Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza, and an ally of the French, vanquished the Spanish troops of Caspar Azevedo. It was also the birthplace of St Luigi Orione, made a saint by Pope John Paul II in 2004, in recognition of his work with orphans and the poor.
This Piedmont/Piemonte hotel is ideal for exploring the Monferrato and Le Langhe areas of the region, and is within easy reach of Milan, Turin and Genoa, and the international airports of those cities - a beautiful part of northern Italy.
