The impressive four-star Hotel Villa Potenziani is in the historical town of Rieti, Lazio, less than an hour from Rome. This pretty medieval city, set against a mountain backdrop, has plenty of sights to explore, including its ancient city walls, beautiful cathedral, remains of a Roman bridge and the imposing Palazzo Vescovile (Bishop's Palace) with its grand entrance. Dating back to 1778, Villa Potenziani was once a hunting lodge, then a royal residence, and was carefully refurbished in the 1990s and made into a luxury hotel. It has many of the beautiful original features still preserved, from the grand stone staircase leading up from the surrounding wooded parkland, to the frescoes and friezes inside.

The hotel offers 28 rooms - all with panoramic views - four of which are suites. All have bathroom, air conditioning, mini bar, satellite TV, internet connection and safety deposit box. Each room is different from the others, with its own style of furnishings, tapestries and upholstery. The excellent Belle Epoque hotel restaurant, in the former ceremonial hall with its carved wooden ceiling, serves up regional, national and international cuisine together with quality wines, and can accommodate up to 180 guests for business lunches. For conventions and seminars, there are also three fully equipped meeting rooms. If you're here simply to relax, then you can enjoy the lovely outdoor swimming pool, the tennis courts and the well-equipped gym, which also offers a massage service. Further afield, there's plenty for water sports enthusiasts thanks to the region's ten lakes.
