Hotel Villa San Giovanni, Erice
The Hotel Villa San Giovanni lies in the centre of the Sicilian town of Erice. But the medieval heart of Erice is only half the story - this extraordinary hilltop town, which sits some 750 metres above sea level on the western coast of Sicily - can trace its roots back to the 12th century BC. History is part of the fabric of the city, with parts of the ancient Phoenician defensive wall still in place at the north-western edge of the 'centro storico'.
This stone building sits on the green eastern slope of Monte Erice, within its own medieval garden. From here you can gaze down onto Sicily's western Mediterranean coast, from Bonagia to San Vito lo Capo. In the distance, the Egadi Islands float in the blue waters. On exceptionally clear days, you can even espy the coast of north Africa. You are just three minutes' stroll from the ancient heart of Erice hear, with the main piazza, shops, restaurants and cafes nearby. Yet this is an idyllically quiet setting, with the hotel's lovely garden making for a great place to rest and recharge your batteries.
Each evening you can take a drink on the terrace, absorbing the sheer beauty of the place, before dining on traditional Sicilian cuisine, made using the freshest, local ingredients and produce. Rooms are single or double, all with bathroom, phone, balcony and phone. The hotel has a bar, facilities for guests with limited mobility, non smoking rooms, free parking and a 24-hour front desk. There is WiFi internet access.
