Hotel Villa Volpi, Mastiano
This three-star hotel lies on the outskirts of Lucca, a Tuscan city rich in both art and history. The centre of town is medieval (and it lies within intact defensive walls dating from the Renaissance era). There are a large number of churches to visit including the Duomo di San Martino (Lucca Cathedral), a fine example of the Romanesque with its beautiful facade. Also worth a visit is the Casa di Puccini, where the famous composer Giacomo Puccini was born in 1858. Now a museum, it contains the Steinway piano on which he composed the opera Turandot.
The Villa Volpi Hotel offers a panoramic view of the Tuscan countryside. It sits in a 20 hectare estate of olive trees and vineyards. The hotel produces its own organically certified produce. The 16 elegant rooms offer all the comforts including air conditioning, refrigerator, safe, direct dial telephone, satellite television and an internet connection. The bathrooms all have hairdryers.
The swimming pool, which is heated by solar panels, is situated so that you can relax and enjoy the fabulous views across the valley. The bar serves snacks and local wines while you sit on the restful terrace. If you're feeling a little more energetic the hotel has mountain bikes available to explore the countryside. Alternatively you could enjoy one of the many spa treatments on offer.
The restaurant offers classic regional cuisine prepared with fresh ingredients including seasonal vegetables, locally reared meat and game hunted in the surrounding forests. Whether visiting the local countryside, historic sights or sampling the local cuisine this hotel near Lucca offers it all.
