A marvellous 19th century villa, beautifully restored - the Hotel Villamare overlooks the promenade at Rodi Garganico, and lies just 10 metres from the sea in this charming town on Puglia's Adriatic coast. This is the Gargano Promontory, where the coast of Italy pushes out into the waters of the Italian Adriatic. It's a superb and varied coastline, with craggy cliffs and coves, glorious sandy beaches, and with the forest of the Foresta Umbria inland. Just to the west of the town are the sea lagoons of Lago di Lesina and Lago di Varano - important habitats for wildfowl. And the promontory is a protected area under the auspices of the Parco Nazionale del Gargano.

There is the more modern pilgrimage site of San Giovanni Rotondo, which since the death of local priest Padre Pio in 1968 has become a focus for pilgrims second only to Lourdes. And there are a collection of lovely beach resorts, including Mattinata and Vieste.
