Hotel Villamare, Syracuse
This hotel in Syracuse (Siracusa) is perfect for travellers wanting not only to discover the delights of this ancient city, of the lovely island of Sicily, and also wanting to spend some time unwinding on the golden beaches of the Mediterranean. This airy open plan hotel is less than two blocks away from the sea but convenient for transport to and from the cultural hub of downtown Syracuse. All rooms are designed with unique Sicilian fabrics and some beds are four-posted and hung with drapes.
Lovers of ancient history will find plenty to distract them within the city walls. Perhaps the best place to get a feel for medieval Syracuse is on the island suburb of Ortygia - the oldest part of the city, dating back 2700 years. Less than 1km square, this compact maze of winding passageways and limestone gateways is a perfect place to lose yourself for an afternoon. Keep an eye out for the Fonte Aretusa which sits above the harbour, a charming fountain pumping fresh spring water into a fish-filled pond. Admiral Nelson drank water from here before setting off to the Battle of the Nile, but you might be better off leaving it for the ducks!
Back in the comfortable environs of this Siracusa hotel, you can have an evening meal in the walled garden - the hotel restaurant serves a selection of local and national dishes and regional wines. Breakfast is included in the price of your room, and parents should note that babysitting services and cot hire are available at reception.
