Hotel Vittoria, Trapani

The Hotel Vittoria is set in the heart of Trapani, on the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, and has terrific views over the city and out to the Egadi islands. These make a great trip out for a day from Trapani. Trapani itself has much to offer, with some good restaurants and pizzerias, very pretty public gardens and a beach within easy reach. This is a very ancient city, founded by the Elymians in late antiquity, as the port town for the hilltop city of Erice, which gazes down upon Trapani from the top of Monte San Giuliano, behind the town.

Heading out from Trapani, we have that marvellous town of Erice. For most of the year a cable car runs up the side of the mountain and to the ancient city above. Largely medieval in its current form, the city gives superb views back down over Trapani and to the Egadi Islands (and reportedly even to north Africa on a good day). There is the lovely old town of Marsala down the coast, with its fine sixteenth century 'centro storico', and its sea lagoon to the front of the town. There are important archeological sits at Selinunte and Segesta, and the coastline around here is dotted with fine beaches.
