Hotel Walser, Courmayeur
The northern reaches of the Valle d'Aosta are dominated by rugged mountains, the most impressive of which, Mont Blanc, provides a magnificent backdrop to the small town of Courmayeur. Perhaps the smartest and most popular of the region's ski resorts this town not only has magnificent views but is also brilliantly located, via the cable cars, for access to many of Italy's and France's best slopes.
The three-star Hotel Walser is located in the central Piazzale Monte Bianco in the middle of Courmayeur. Built in traditional Alpine style, it offers 22 rooms with ensuite bathrooms, all air conditioned and fully equipped with telephone, safety deposit box, TV and free parking with views of Mont Blanc as standard. The lounge and bar offer restorative drinks after exhilarating days spent on the slopes, whilst the concierge desk can make restaurant recommendations, arrange car hire, ski passes and also airport transfers. There is table tennis and access to a nearby nine-hole golf course for days when aching muscles or weather prevent the donning of sunglasses and skis. There are also meeting facilities for guests who are combining business with pleasure.
With all this exercise you can perhaps be forgiven for over indulging in the fabulous traditional cuisine. With much of the pasta, risotto and desserts heavily laden with butter and cream there will be many calories to work off on the slopes, but in amongst the creamy confections there is also the local speciality of white truffles, porcini mushrooms, good, rich soups and a profusion of great regional wines.
