Hotel Zilema, near Cosenza

Calabria in southern Italy has the wild Tyrrhenian Sea on its western coast and the Ionian sea to the east. Cosenza, just inland from the stunning beaches on the Tyrrhenian coast, is one of this region's largest and most culturally significant towns.

The three-star Hotel Zilema is ideally placed to explore all the rich history of Cosenza and also to take advantage of all the many lovely beaches and dramatic Sila mountain range. This small, family-run hotel has a selection of accommodation, including single, double and quadruple rooms with balconies, many of which have views of the sea. All are spacious, clean and bright and come equipped with air conditioning, satellite TV, telephone, minibar and shower room. The restaurant offers a range of fantastic Calabrese dishes with locally sourced ingredients and seafood specialities, whilst the bar serves pre- and post-dinner drinks to be enjoyed after a hard day on the beach.

With so much on offer in the area it is perhaps just as well that the concierge desk is on hand 24 hours a day to make sure that you make the most of your stay. With canoeing, horse riding, hiking and tennis available, not to mention, fishing, diving and golf, the friendly staff can advise and make reservations whilst also arranging boat and car hire and airport transfers. The outdoor play area is fantastic for children and the meeting facilities with internet connection and photocopying cater for the most demanding of business travellers.

You have to explore the culture of Cosenza too. There is the twelfth century church with a facade in the original Romanesque-Benedictine style: inside it is divided into three naves, and contains the fine chapel of the Madonna of the Pilerio, patron saint of the city. It has beautiful frescoes, the sepulchre of Isabel of Aragon and the sarcophagus of Meleager. The significance of Isabel of Aragon to this town is immense for it was here that, returning from the eighth crusade, she fell from her horse and died.

This Cosenza accommodation is a perfect choice of hotel for anyone wanting to explore this lovely and unspoilt part of southern Italy.
