A beautifully restored 1920s tobacco factory, Il Tabacchificio Hotel is in Gagliano del Capo, a kilometre from the coast and 2km from Santa Maria di Leuca in Puglia's Salentine peninsula. The La Campate restaurant offers the best in typical Salentine cooking. Salento is the southern part of the Puglia/Apulia region, the heel of Italy, and one of the main crops has long been tobacco. This old factory is typical of the industrial architecture of its time, with marvellous star-vaulted roofs creating a quite unique atmosphere. It translates beautifully as a luxury hotel, with 38 rooms, seven of them 'superior' and nine studio rooms.

Rooms are single, double, triple and quadruple, and accommodation is on a bed and breakfast or half board basis. All have minibar, telephone, bathroom with shower and toilet, TV and air conditioning. Every room is unique, each bearing the name of a Salentine locality, and each with the paintings of Andrea Morgan, which beautifully capture the essence of Salento. The hotel has a restaurant, shops, express check-in and -out, and there are rooms for guests with limited mobility. The hotel has a swimming pool, business centre, WiFi internet access and there is babysitting and childcare services.

Head out into Salento and you have a delightful land to explore. Being a peninsula, the beaches are never far away, with both the Adriatic coast and the Ionian Sea. This is a coastline of rugged cliffs, with little caves and coves, and old ruined watchtowers, which kept guard against the constant risk of incursion from Turkey to the east. From this coastline you can see the shores of Albania and Greece. There are gorgeous sandy beaches and a delightfully unspoiled, unhurried atmosphere.
