The largest of the islands in Italy's Bay of Naples, and just off the coast of Campania, the isle of Ischia is a perennial draw for tourists from northern Europe for its lovely climate, verdant scenery and thermal springs. Ischia is a volcanic isle, though this geo-thermal activity is these days expressed in the volcanic mud baths and hot springs that have proved so popular since ancient times. Today, some 6m visitors a year come, and many settle here (there are some 5000 Germans living on Ischia). The most famous residents have included Henrik Ibsen, who wrote at least some of Peer Gynt here, and English composer William Walton who, with his wife Susanna, created the superb gardens of his house, La Mortella.

The island is delightfully green, and in the mountainous interior is pretty much unpopulated - it's easy to escape the tourist trail. The main town is Ischia Porto, and this is where the ferries pull in. With a main street flanked with Indian figs and lemon trees, and two very nice beaches in Spiaggia San Pietro and Spiaggia degli Inglesi, some chic boutiques and pleasant bars and cafes, it's a lovely little town. Sights include the Castello Aragonese (seen in the Matt Damon movie 'The Talented Mr Ripley') and lying dramtatically offshore. There is the Villa La Colombaia, with gardens and a museum dedicated to Luchino Visconti. And there is of course La Mortella, which is quite lovely. Along the northern and western coasts, you have the spa resorts, including Casmiccio-La Terme and Lacco Ameno. On the western tip, Forio has some excellent beaches in the Spiaggia di Chiaia and di Citara; see too the Cava del Isola and the Giardini Poseidon (with thermal spas).

The fishing village of Sant'Angelo is rather lovely, with the Spiaggia dei Maronti nearby, the Fumarole (volcanic steam jets) and the spa at Terme Cavascura. Or climb up to Fontana, at the crater of Ischia's now-dormant Monte Epomeo.

To the left you'll find a selection of Ischia hotels, just to whet your appetite. See also Ischia hotels (full listings) and our Ischia hotel map.
