Sitting almost at the western point of the Sorrentine peninsula, where the promontory thrusts out into the southern Mediterranean, Massa Lubrense is a sunsoaked paradise in the southern Italian region of Campania. A very nice combination of seaside and beautiful hinterland, the local area has more than 100km of marked trails, for walkers and bikers, in the craggy inland region. The 20 miles of coastline, meanwhile, sit smack in the middle of the Protected Marine Area of Punta Campanella. You'll find loads of good beaches and plenty of places to visit (though why should you want to!). Capri is just 5km offshore, Positano is around 20km away, Amalfi 40km. This was the heart of Classical southern Italy, shrouded as much in myth and legend as fact, and the heartland of Ancient Rome. Pompeii and Herculaneum lie at around 30km and Vesuvius a little further. Sorrento is just minutes away. There are a number of national parks, and the town of Massa Lubrense itself, clinging to the slopes rising from the Mediterranean, and surrounded by greenery and woodland, is very pretty. And within minutes too you have some of Campania's finest restaurants. The food and wine of Campania and of the Sorrento peninsula, are a delight. Lots of seafood of course, and Naples is the home of the pizza.
