A couple of kilometres east of Sorrento, on Campania's Sorrentine peninsula, the little town of Sant'Agnello occupies a delightful position. With the Mediterranean on two coasts you're never far from the beach, while Sant'Agnello itself is a pleasantly quiet little place - the hotels nestling amid greenery between the hills and the sea. With mighty Mount Vesuvius brooding on the horizon, you have the blue waters of the Bay of Naples to the north. The Circumvesiana narrow-gauge railway gets you swiftly into Naples, which is some 25km from here, but in ambience and pace of life you could be a continent away. The ruined Roman cities of Herculaneum (Ercolaneo) and Pompeii are both within easy reach - a great day trip. And there are boats on hand for trips out to the lovely islands of Ischia and Capri. Sights in the town include the Villa Crawford, former home of the novelist Francis Marion Crawford, who lived in Sant'Agnello from 1887 until his death in 1909. There is the Chiesa (church) Frati Cappuccin and La Tenuta della Cocumella. The delightful main square of the town is the Piazza Matteotti, while one of the prime beaches is the Spiaggia la Marinella. Nearby towns well worth visiting include Sorrento of course, and Positano, on the other (southern) side of the peninsula.
