Squeezed into an inlet in the rocks on the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula, little Praiano is one of the more charming spots on Italy's very lovely Amalfi Coast (Costa Amalfitana). The town, in Salerno province of Campania region, lies between Amalfi to the east and the chic resort of Positano to the west, but is much smaller and quieter than its more famous neighbours. It has two centres, Marina di Praiano on the Amalfi side and Vettica Maggiore on the Positano side. There is a very nice, if small, beach, and sandy inlets for bathing. Among the attractions is the Grotto Esmerelda (the 'green grotto'). Take the boat trip inside and you see a remarkable green light reflecting from the water and the rocks of the cave. The Amalfi Coast itself is reckoned by many to be the most beautiful stretch of coastline in Europe. And with its serpentine road winding around the precipitous cliffs with the blue ocean glittering beneath, it irresistibly conjures images of the 'Dolce Vita' Italy of the 1950s. One can easily picture Cary Grant and Grace Kelly zipping round these bends in an open-top sports car. Continue the Martini commercial lifestyle with a boat trip out to the lovely isle of Capri, while inland Campania boasts buzzing Naples (Napoli), Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum (Ercolaneo).
