The 'party town' neighbour to the ever-popular Adriatic seaside resort of Rimini, Riccione has grown enormously in the last few years with its nightclubs pulling visitors from the US and northern Europe. But that's far from the whole story, with Riccione also a family destination thanks to its wealth of theme parks. This stretch of Italy's Emilia-Romagna coastline has good sandy beaches, lots of hotels, apartments and campsites, and beautiful green countryside inland. There are a host of theme parks on this 'Romagna Riviera' including the Aquafan aquatic park, with water slides and flumes, and the new Imax and Oltermare parks. There is Fiabilandia for younger children, and Italia in Miniatura, Cattolica's Le Navi Aquarium, and the superb Mirabilandia.
The beaches have a wealth of activies with beach volleyball and tennis, aqua gyms and beach soccer. There is sailing, kite surfing and wind surfing hire, deep sea fishing on hire motorboats out of Riccione ... or you can simply ease away your day under your sunshade, while sipping on the occasional prosecco. The Riviera Golf Resort, 3km from the beach, is a brand-new 18-hole course. The town has a number of gyms and wellness centres plus the Terme di Riccione, one of the best equipped thermal spas in Italy. Riccione has some terrific restaurants and affordable pizzerias, cafes, gelaterias and other choices for the family. Romagna cuisine is based on clams, scampi, mutton, rabbit, and local pastas such as the superbly named strozzapreti ('priest strangler').
