Viserbella lies just to the north of Rimini on Italy's perenially popular Adriatic Riviera. This is 'Italy on Sea', with Rimini the most famous of the run of resorts where the Italians themselves decamp to take the sun, sea and sand each year. The town is in Rimini province, in the Emilia-Romagna region. Traditional seaside fun yes, but being Italy it's a cut above the fare you'd find at Blackpool. This is a family resort first and foremost, with the livelier clubbing scene to be found south of here, as Rimini merges into neighbouring Riccione.
As well as great beaches, a plethora of good restaurants, bars, cafes and ice cream parlours (gelaterie), Rimini even has a number of historic sights, should you feel the need of some culture during your Italian vacation. The town dates back to the days of the Gauls and Rome, and in the Middle Ages was taken by Lombardy, and then ruled by the all-powerful Malatesta clan. Giotto headed the School of Rimini painters in the 14th century and there is much to enjoy once you head away from the beach. You'll find a 13th century Cathedral (the Tempio Malatestiano), the Arch of Augustus and Tiberius Bridge from the Classical era and the second century amphitheatres. There is the 16th century church of San Giuliano Martire with the eponymous painting by Paul Veronese, the Castel Sismondo, and a number of other fine churches. Check out the archaeological museum too.
