Sat on the western shore of Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore), Baveno is a lovely little town in Piedmont's Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province. With a population of some 4500 people, considerably swelled during the tourist season. You look down upon Baveno from the green hills above, across the blue waters of Lake Maggiore to the mountains on the far shore. Baveno is characterised by an attractive run of historic villas and castles, many of them built during the 19th century. Queen Victoria was just one notable who stayed here during the 19th century. Baveno itself is very ancient though, and was occupied during the Iron Age by the Ligurian Lepontii tribe. During these ancient times copper was mined along the lakeside, though the level of the water was then some 14 metres higher than it is today - these shoreside workings are today up in the hills. Ancient Roman remains are frequently discovered in the area. Near neighbours to Baveno include the lake town of Stresa. A ferry runs out across the neck of the lake to Verbania and down to the Isola Bella. North of here you have the beautiful Parco Nazionale della Val Grande, and Lago d'Orta (Lake Orta) is just west of Baveno. With a number of other beautiful lakes, this is the heart of Italy's Lake District.
