A little town in Puglia (or Apulia), Alberobello is a stop on the holidaymaker's itinerary for one very good reason ... trulli. There are around 1500 of these extraordinary conical stone dwellings here, the largest concentration of these typical Apulian dwellings. Trulli in fact would look more at home on another planet than in southern Italy - often whitewashed or sometimes plain stone, circular and capped with a cone roof. The trulli also fan out into the surrounding countryside and Itria Valley. You can even stay in trulli hotels and you'll find examples on our pages. This is Puglia's Bari province, the spur on the heel of Italy and you're never far away from the sea. You have the Adriatic Coast to the north and east, with the Ionian Sea to the south and west. Nearby towns include Locorotondo and Martina Franca, the latter having a distinctively Moorish flavour. This most southerly part of Italy is a delightful mixture of influences in fact, having been much invaded down the centuries. Greek, Spanish, Norman and a dozen more, with a distinct Albanian community still speaking a version of the language. Puglia, as well as being the 'bread basket' of Italy has terrific food and wine and superb weather, with reliable sunshine. In fact the sun beating down on the whitewashed trulli of Alberobello evokes north Africa as much as Mediterranean Europe.
