The second largest island in the Mediterranean (after Sicily), Sardinia (Sardegna) is almost equidistant between the Italian mainland (Tuscany) and north Africa. With three international airports (Olbia, Alghero and Cagliari) it is accessible but blessedly unspoiled.
The endless miles of coastline are gradually being developed but it's not hard to find a stretch of sand to yourself, and the mountainous hinterland is near deserted. Major towns include Sassari, Nuoro, Oristano and the the capital, Cagliari, which has a marvellous old town (Castello), a complex warren of winding alleys. Must-sees include the mysterious Nuraghi - neolithic buildings and remnants of the lost inhabitants of Sardinia. There is the vast cave at Tiscali, housing a prehistoric village, and the Classical ruins at Nora.
Head inland and the mountainous Baragia and Gallura regions are quite stunning. The regional food is terrific, fresh and simple: suckling pig, lobster, fish stews, bottarga (mullet egg caviar), huge ravioli parcels, salty pecorino sardo cheese, and delicious pastries flavoured with lemon, almond or orange water. Wines include the Mandrolasi and Cannonau di Sardegna reds, and Torbato and Trebbiano Sardo whites. Vernaccia is a sherry-type wine, dry as an aperitif, sweet as a dessert wine.
