Earning lasting fame as the site of the development of the first working internal combustion engine (Eugenio Barsanti and Felice Matteucci in 1854) the Tuscan comune of Campi Bisenzio enjoys rather less arcane renown as a convenient stopping place just north-west of Florence (Firenze). Under its aegis are a collection of villages and hamlets including Capalle, Limite, Le Miccine, San Cresci, San Piero a Ponti, Il Rosi, San Donnino, San Giorgio a Colonica, and Sant'Angelo a Lecore.
Nearby towns include Calenzano, Poggio a Caiano, Prato, Scandicci, Sesto Fiorentino, Signa. Convenience is the key here, with the area just 7km from Florence's Amerigo Vespucci airport (at Peretola), close to the rail station at Calenzano, and thus just a short hop in to the many sights of historic downtown Florence - the Ponte Vecchio, the Galleria dell'Accademia, the Uffizi, the Duomo, the superb museums and galleries, shops and restaurants. A ten-minute bus ride gets you into the 'centro storico of Florence. There is good shopping at I Gigli (a large shopping mall nearby). Hotels in the commercial and industrial Campi Bisenzio tend to be modern and arguably offer more room than those in the centre of the old town.
