A region of north-eastern Italy, the Veneto is bordered to the east by the Adriatic sea and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, to the north by Trentino-Alto Adige, west by Lombardy and south by Emilia-Romagna.
Principle towns of the Veneto include Venice, Treviso, Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Rovigo, Mantua, and smaller towns such as Castelfranco, Asolo, Belluno, Bassano del Grappa, Este and Montagnana. The gems of Venice include San Marco, the Doge's Palace, the Accademia, the canals of course and the yearly carnival. But don't overlook Padua and Verona, two delightful historic cities with fine architecture and galleries.
Regional dishes include much seafood, risottos, pork, polenta, thick bean soups, excellent pastries and sweets. Wines include excellent sparking proseccos. Verona has its open-air opera in a Roman amphitheatre, plus lovely pink-hued medieval buildings. There is the Brenta, with fine Palladian villas, and there are the Giotto frescoes of Padua. Treviso has fine Gothic churches, and Asolo is the lovely walled 'city of 100 horizons'.
