The little Veneto town of Bibione lies some 60km up the coast from Venice, east of Trieste, and on the northern shores of the Adriatic Ocean and close to the border with Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region. Bibione is all about the beach: a full eight kilometres of golden sands makes the town one of the most prized tourist destinations for Italian visitors on the northern Adriatic. This sandy spit of land lies between Porto di Baselghe and the river mouth of the Tagliamento. As well as the fine beaches, the resort has a modern thermal spa (thermae). The newer part of Bibione is known as Lido del Sole, set between the centre of town and Pineda. You'll find a host of cycling paths here and some good sports facilities. There's a delightfully mild climate in Bibione, and the beaches are occupied from May to September. The days' sunbathing and beach aerobics, volleyball and football give way at night to firework displays and musical evenings - the town authorities have made a laudable effort to build more into what was, a few years ago, little more than a collection of holiday hotels on a geographically blessed part of the coast. There are lots of shops in the town centre, with arts and crafts stores and fashion boutiques, shopping malls and souvenir shops. Bibione is good for pubs, clubs, restaurants, bars and gelaterie, and though buzzing at night it buzzes in a very civilised Italian way - Ibiza this isn't! To the left you'll find a selection of Bibione hotels, just to whet your appetite. See also Bibione hotels (full listings) and our Bibione hotel map. |
