Lying some 120km west of Venice and 35km north west of Verona, the Veneto town of Brenzone is on the eastern shores of the lovely Lake Garda. A little town of some 2400 people, Brenzone is a long-established and distinctly upmarket tourist spot, lying between the slopes of Mount Baldo and Garda Veronese. This peaceful little municipality is a great base for further explorations, to the Garda towns of Peschiera, Torri del Benaco, Garda Bardolino, Lazise and Malcesine.
Very prettily snuggled at the foot of the wooded slopes, Brenzone has a reliably mild and fresh climate, with no dramatic variations of temperature around the year. Characteristic of the lakeside is a huge diversity of flora and fauna. Species of trees include ilex, cypress, olive, almond, oleander and a host more. As you climb the slopes, the cypresses give way to lemon trees and thence to chestnuts. Climbing to the snowy peaks, you are surrounded by pine, fir and larch. Native animals include partridge, grouse, marmots, roe bucks and chamois, eagles and a myriad different species of butterfly.
A beautiful part of northern Italy then, with excursions out onto Lake Garda and sights to see in Brenzone itself, including the Church of San Zeno and the little church of St Nicola in Bari. Also see the Villa Cassona Rizzardi, set in lovely parkland.
