The town sits on the Golfo dei Poeti, much-beloved of Byron and Petrach among others, and has many sites worth visiting. These include the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its striped duomo, the Naval Museum and the bustling market which takes over the Piazza Cavour every Saturday morning. The Museo Amedeo Lia has a celebrated collection of medieval and Renaissance art, which draws in visitors from afar. Among its most prized works are Titian's Portrait of a Gentleman and Bellini's Portrait of an Attorney.
A short bus ride along the peninsula to Portovenere offers stunning views over the bay and out to the islands. This scenic village is worth visiting for the 12th-century Church of San Lorenzo, with its ivory caskets and the hillside castello with its panoramic views and pretty terraced gardens. Head to the port and you can take a boat ride around the three nearby islands, Palmaria, Tinetto and Tino.
The family-run Locanda Dal Moccia has beautiful gardens with a dining terrace shaded by a vine-draped trellis. Dalmoccia's trattoria serves typical Ligurian fare, such as meat-filled fresh ravioli, and a Franciscan tomato and bacon omelette, which is cut into ribbons and served chilled. A fine selection of local wines are also on offer. All the bedrooms are equipped with a television and an ensuite bathroom and parking is available to guests.
