Masseria Refrigerio, Ostuni

The lovely Masseria Refrigerio is a charming rural retreat on the edge of the glorious whitewashed southern Italian town of Ostuni: the hotel lying close to the sea. Built around 1500, this atmospheric hotel was originally a monastery and still has a lovely, timeless ambience. The delightful Puglian town of Ostuni lies just 7km away and is one of southern Italy's most spectacular sights - a spiral of dazzling whitewashed stone buildings clinging to the tops of three adjacent hills. An important Greco-Roman city in the first century AD, its sun-bleached cobbled streets and gleaming buildings are steeped in centuries of history.

Run by Domenica and Gaetano, the hotel has 27 beautifully appointed rooms, which have been lovingly converted from the original cells of the ancient monastery. Each room is comfortably air-conditioned and has its own private bathroom together with colour TV, minibar and a small kitchenette where guests can throw together a light meal. Families with young children are made especially welcome and there is a reduced rate for under-12s; under-threes stay free of charge and there is a babysitting service. Children's cots and high-chairs are available on request and the hotel has specially designated children's play areas both indoors and out.

The Refrigerio restaurant adjacent to the Masseria offers a tempting menu centred around traditional home cooking, and there is a free shuttle service to the charming, rustic 'La Sparacima' restaurant in Ostuni's historic centre. The hotel also has links with another lovely seafront restaurant 'Lido Bizzarro', which specialises in seafood and delicious local pizzas.

There is 24-hour service (including porterage) on reception, and the hotel also has its own currency exchange and travel reservation service. Luggage can be left with confidence and there is also a safety-deposit as well as a parcel-post facility at the front desk. Business guests are invited to take advantage of the business-support facilities, which include internet access, secretarial services and photocopying. Major credit cards welcome.
