The city has been hugely regenerated in recent years, and adds a lively restaurant, bar and club culture around the harbour to its historic and cultural delights. Sights include the Opera and the Doges' Palace. There is the house where Columbus is said to have been born. And there is Via Garibaldi in the old town, a street of Mannerist palazzi from the 16th century, now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See too the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, and the marvellous old harbour (Porto Antico) now transformed by architect Renzo Piano.
