Morandi alla Crocetta, Florence
Art lovers need look no further than this Florence hotel, on the site of the former convent of La Crocetta, for a truly memorable experience. This historic building contains its own seventeenth century frescoes of Sister Domenica of Paradise, who founded the original convent with the aid of the Medici family back in 1511. The three-star Hotel Morandi alla Crocetta, Florence is surrounded by cultural landmarks: bordering Via Laura, where the hotel is situated, are the Archaeology Museum's gardens, containing Etruscan tombs and Roman columns. At number 48, on the site of the former church of La Crocetta, stands the law school of the University of Florence while further up the street at number 56 the Florentine writer Bruno Cicognani lived and died.
Antique furniture, wooden beamed ceilings and distinctive architecture make this hotel in Florence a cosy hideaway from the bustle of the town. While the bedrooms preserve the traditional style, technologically speaking they are not in the dark ages. All are equipped with wireless internet, satellite TV and direct dial telephones. They also have en-suite bathrooms (with hairdryers), room safes, clock-radios and mini-bars.
From this base in downtown Florence you will be perfectly placed to visit the famous Duomo (cathedral) of Santa Maria del Fiore, climb its Campanile, cross the shop-lined Ponte Vecchio (bridge) and take a stroll in the idyllic Boboli Gardens. For a postcard-perfect view over the city, head up to the Piazzale Michelangelo where you can sample the many flavours of gelati (ice cream) while you take in the scenery.
