The architectural and artistic delights of Pisa are contained within a pleasantly manageable area - Pisa may have been a mighty medieval empire but cities came small in the 11th and 12th centuries, and most of what you'll see is within walking distance. There is much to pack into a holiday though. Pisa has a dozen or so important medieval churches and palazzi, and as well as the superb Romanesque and Gothic architecture, these are places of worship hung with the works of the Italian masters, names such as Jacopo da Empoli, Taddeo Gaddi and Santi di Tito.

There are the Botanic Gardens of the Orto botanico di Pisa, the Gothic town hall Palazzo Gambacotti, and a clutch of fine museums in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, the Museo delle Sinopie, the Museo Nazionale di S. Matteo and a half dozen more. And there is of course the Campo dei Miracoli, the Field of Miracles. Perhaps the most perfect assemblage of medieval urban architecture still extant, this cathedral piazza contains the cathedral (Duomo) itself, the Baptistery, Camposanto, and of course the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
