Ferrara itself is suffused with history. This was once a city state, ruled during the Middle Ages by the Este Dukes, and a town whose importance belied its size. Within the (still extant) medieval city walls, the Este dynasty created one of Europe's most important courts, a centre of music, painting, poetry and culture - the family themselves intermarried with the notorious Borgias. The legacy today is a remarkable number of surviving early Renaissance palaces, a fine cathedral, the Este seat of the Castello Estese, and fine museums such as the Museo Ebraico and the Museo della Cattedrale.
