New Hotel Palace, Marsala
This opulent four-star hotel on Sicily is located in a grand 19th-century villa built by an Englishman, just 5km from the beach. Now a luxurious, family-run venture, it is just 300 metres from the port of Marsala, with its historic centre and fascinating wine history. From Marsala, you can visit the Egadi islands by hydrofoil - it's also a great base for those who want to take in the ancient sites at Selinunte and Segesta, which would make a good day trip. There's much to see and do on this western coast itself, too, with its picturesque landscape dotted with windmills and rich blue skies. Follow the tourist route of the Salt Road and learn more about this vital industry, or if you are interested in wildlife, the Stagnone (lagoon) nature reserve is a must, teeming with rare bird species.
The New Hotel Palace, Marsala offers a good combination of modern facilities and stunning 19th-century architecture. There's a wonderful octagonal domed ceiling, painted with representations of the four seasons, and the wooden bar is a real period piece, complete with tiled floor and chandelier. The rooms feature frescoes by famous artists as well as the modern conveniences of air conditioning, direct-dial telephones, refrigerated minibars and cable television. Outside, there are pretty gardens with a children's play area and a large swimming pool with a picturesque group of palm trees in the centre. The restaurant, which seats 200 people, offers a fine menu of both regional specialities and international dishes, and there are excellent facilities for business travellers.
