The site of Ostia Antica marked the coastline in classical times, it was here that the port of Ancient Rome was based, the remains of which have been amazingly preserved by the mud of the Tiber. Relatively empty of tourists, this is a fascinating excavation, huge in its proportions, in fact it is much easier to reconstruct a Roman town out of these remains than it is from the infinitely more popular Forum in central Rome.
