Palazzo Grande Residenza d'Epoca, Corciano: what a superb setting for this very special Corciano hotel. The Palazzo has been created within a seventeenth century villa, which sits nestled within a vast estate covering over 30 hectares. The grounds of this Corciano hotel are ancient woodlands, olive groves, cherry and walnut groves and working farmlands. The house itself is an old stately home artfully transformed into a period residence with 19 suites and rooms. Every modern comfort is in place, but no compromise has been made on the elegance of the decor and furnishings. Deluxe rooms feature hydromassage baths. The town of Corciano lies in the Perugia province of Umbria region, some 8km west of the city of Perugia itself. Very ancient, the town was probably Etruscan in foundation (a set of bronze panels from an Etruscan chariot were discovered in 1812 at Castel San Mariano di Corciano). An even more colourful history has the town being founded by Coragino, a companion of the mythical Ulysses. The inhabitants then decamped to the hilltop in the post-Roman era. The hilltown is typical of Umbria, and like so many others, Corciano's move was defensive - the town made a sitting target down in the valley. The shape of the town today, with curving concentric streets, is evidence of the three walls that once encircled the town. There is the Church of St Francis of Assisi, with 14th and 15th century frescoes, commemorating the saint's visit to the town. See too the Castello, part of the old fortifications. This Corciano hotel makes a great base for exploring lovely Umbria too.
