Piccolo Hotel Il Palio, Siena
Siena is one of Italy's most historically enticing cities, and the Piccolo Hotel Il Palio puts you at the very heart of this marvellous medieval town.
Originally a monastery called the "Convento dei Tre Mori", the Minotel Piccolo Hotel Il Palio is a marvellous old building dating from the fifteenth century, and lies in the 'centro storico' of Siena. And despite lying just a short distance from the Piazza del Campo, and the architecturally unique Duomo (cathedral), the hotel is easy to reach by car. There is a large parking area nearby. The hotel is perfect for families, with a family room and indoor play areas.
Best of all, you are in a relaxing base at the very heart of the city. The best restaurants are just a short stroll away (the central part of town is made up of pedestrianised medieval alleyways) as are the main sights. These include the Campo, a medieval scallop-shaped piazza that is the heart and soul of Siena. It is here that the extraordinary Palio bareback horse races are run every summer, and it is here that the Sienese gather each evening to drink coffee, take a glass of wine and talk about the day.
And there is much more to see including the marvellous Duomo and Palazzo Pubblico, superb examples of Italian Gothic architecture, and splendid museums and galleries such as the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
