Pienza itself is an absolutely unique creation. When Pope Pius II decided, in the mid 1400s, that he wanted a peaceful retreat from Rome, he did it in style. The pontiff's family had been exiled from nearby Siena, to the lawless Tuscan-Umbrian border town of Corsignano, where Pius had been one of 18 children in the family. He commissioned the great Florentine architect Bernardo Gambarelli (Rossellino) to create a new city on top of Corsignano, and so Pienza was born. Today, the 'city' has a duomo, the Palazzo Borgia, fine churches and civic buildings ... but a population of just 2500. But though Pius's experiment in Renaissance humanist town planning never grew as he planned, it became a template for the new towns and cities of first Italy, then all Europe. This Pienza hotel is at its heart.

Today, Pienza is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it makes a lovely place to explore (it doesn't take very long of course) as well as a superb base for seeing the Val d'Orcia and Tuscany ... one of the most beautiful stretches of central Italy.
